The Northern Lighthouse Board

Internal Auditor & ISO 9001 Transition Training

The Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) is the General Lighthouse Authority (GLA) for the waters surrounding Scotland and the Isle of Man. They’re responsible for the superintendence and management all lights, buoys and beacons within this area, to assist the safe passage of mariners.

The challenge

NLB wanted to establish a tailored course (particular to their organisational needs), facilitating Internal Auditor (IA) Training to ISO 27001 2013 standards, with a specific focus on aligning the associated High Level Structure of the standard with their Organisational Transition to the ISO 9001 & 14001 2015 standards.

NLB's needs

  • Expand the number and repertoire of the existing IA Team, whilst also raising improved awareness and building organisational capacity in relation to the impending transitional requirements associated with both the Quality and Environmental International Standards
  • Support the improved evolution and integration of their Management Systems going forward, in order to: enhance connectivity, support an improved approach to integrated auditing, facilitate greater interdepartmental collaboration and drive continuous improvement as a cultural norm.
  • Focus areas encapsulated within the training included: High Level Structure (HLS) Overview, Dynamic Business Environments, Leadership Context & Risk Based Thinking.

DNV GL's solution: What NLB had to say

The course DNV GL provided successfully delivered on our needs set out above, and offered a balance of theory and practical exercises which engaged the attendees and made for improved organisational alignment and optimum post training value. Most importantly, the training was sufficiently bespoke to bring together the requirement for effective functional internal auditing practice, within the context of a transitional climate in the run up to September 2018. These were NLB’s precise organisational needs and the training therefore formed a key aspect of our transition programme to the new management standards.

The training that DNV GL were able to provide was key to NLB's primary aim of delivering a reliable, efficient and cost-effective Aids to Navigation service for the benefit and safety of all Mariners.
