Europrivacy Certification: GDPR scheme

Strengthen the protection of personal data and demonstrate GDPR-compliant processing across your organisation.

Certification of your data processing activities to the Europrivacy scheme demonstrates your commitment to data protection and compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and related privacy legislation.

As an approved certification mechanism under Article 42 of the GDPR, Europrivacy provides a recognised framework for assessing and demonstrating the compliance of specific data processing activities. It can help organisations manage data protection risks, demonstrate accountability and apply appropriate technical and organisational measures consistently across both established and emerging technologies.

What is Europrivacy?

Europrivacy is a GDPR certification scheme applicable to all types of data processing activities across any sector. It provides a structured and auditable set of requirements for assessing and certifying the GDPR compliance of specific processing operations. Developed through a European research programme funded by the European Commission, the scheme serves as an official certification mechanism under Article 42 of the GDPR.

The scheme is comprehensive and can be applied to almost any type of data processing activity. It enables organisations to document, assess and certify the compliance of their processing operations with the GDPR, as well as relevant EU privacy legislation and national data protection requirements. As the framework can be extended to include supplementary national or sector-specific criteria, certification can also reflect additional legal and industry obligations. Although rooted in European data protection legislation, Europrivacy can be used by organisations worldwide.

Europrivacy provides:

  • Consistent evaluation of processing activities through a harmonised, criteria-based approach
  • Demonstrable accountability aligned with GDPR and related data protection requirements
  • Applicability across a wide range of technologies, including AI, IoT and cloud services
  • A scalable, risk-based approach, allowing organisations to prioritise and certify processing activities progressively as they become ready
  • A structured conformity assessment supported by guidance, templates and assessment tools

Closely aligned with ISO standards, Europrivacy complements management system certifications such as ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701. While these standards certify information security and privacy management systems, Europrivacy is specifically designed to certify the GDPR compliance of individual processing activities.

It is also the first certification scheme submitted by a European national data protection authority to the European Data Protection Board for endorsement at EU level.

Value of Europrivacy certification

Certification to Europrivacy by an independent third party demonstrates that your data processing activities comply with GDPR requirements under Article 42, as well as applicable national data protection regulations. It provides objective assurance that your organisation has identified, assessed and managed the legal, financial and data protection risks associated with its processing activities.

As a result, your organisation can benefit from:

  • Increased trust and confidence among customers, partners and regulators
  • A stronger competitive position in markets where recognised data protection certification is valued
  • Independent assessment and expert insights to help strengthen data protection practices
  • Enhanced reputation through independently verified GDPR compliance
  • Greater transparency through inclusion in the public, blockchain-enabled Europrivacy Registry
  • Reduced legal, regulatory and financial risk through certified GDPR-compliant processing activities

By demonstrating compliance through an internationally recognised certification scheme, organisations can provide stakeholders with credible evidence of their commitment to responsible and effective data protection practices.

Learn how to get started and be certified

    • Obtain the standard:

Get a licensed copy of the relevant standard and familiarise yourself with the requirements to decide whether certification or registration to this standard is appropriate for your organisation.

    • Review available literature and apply digital tools

Explore available literature, guidance from the standard owners (e.g. ISO/TS 9002 for ISO 9001, ISO 14004 for ISO 14001) and digital sources and tools that can support implementation. As a DNV customer, you also get access to tailored tools that can help you.

    • Assemble a team and define strategy:

Implementing a management system should be a strategic decision for the entire organisation. Senior management must be engaged in the decision, committed to it, and involved in shaping the system. They decide the business strategy the management system should support. In addition, you need a dedicated team to develop and implement your management system.

    • Determine competence needs:

First, your team responsible for implementing and maintaining the management system needs a thorough understanding of the chosen standards. Later, the wider organisation needs awareness training. DNV offers a variety of public and in-house courses worldwide that meet competence development needs at all levels of your organisation.

    • Review consultant options:

Independent consultants can advise on a workable, realistic and cost-effective implementation strategy if you do not already have this competence or capacity in-house.

    • Develop management system documentation:

Decide on an appropriate platform for your documented information (e.g. software, process map- or SharePoint-based). The right platform is important to ensure effective management, communication and implementation.

    • Determine, manage and document processes:

First, identify key processes – what they are, how they work and how they interact. Each process should have a clear purpose, defined responsibilities and expected outputs. The level of documented information needed depends on the organisation’s size, complexity and the importance of each process, but it must include the relevant processes and other documented information needed to deliver intended outcomes and comply with the chosen standard’s requirements.

    • Implement management system:

Clear communication and appropriate competence training are essential. During the implementation phase, you will work to ensure that your organisation operates in line with defined and documented processes. Once this is achieved, you can demonstrate the system’s compliance and effectiveness.

    • Select a certification body/registrar:

Selecting the right certification body or registrar can make a difference throughout your certification journey. DNV offers a trusted partnership approach, a risk-based approach and a range of free digital tools to help you manage your certification journey before, during and after the audit.

    • Consider a pre-audit gap analysis:

Consider a preliminary evaluation by your certification body or registrar to identify and correct non-conformities before starting the official certification process. The purpose is to identify areas of non-conformance or weakness, allowing you to address them before the official certification process begins.

FAQ

  • GDPR certification is an independent third-party assessment that verifies whether specific data processing activities comply with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It provides objective assurance that an organisation has implemented appropriate technical and organisational measures, effectively manages data protection risks and can demonstrate accountability to customers, partners and regulators.

Certification schemes such as Europrivacy assess data processing activities against defined GDPR requirements under Article 42, as well as relevant national data protection regulations. Certification can help strengthen trust, support market access and demonstrate a commitment to responsible and transparent processing of personal data.

  • To obtain GDPR certification, or more specifically have compliance with GDPR requirements independently verified, an organisation must undergo an assessment against a recognised certification scheme such as Europrivacy. The assessment focuses on specific data processing activities and evaluates whether they comply with GDPR requirements and applicable data protection obligations.

Under schemes such as Europrivacy, the chosen certification body reviews documentation, conducts interviews, performs sampling and verification activities, and assesses the technical and organisational measures implemented to protect personal data.

  • Achieving GDPR compliance certification means obtaining certification against a recognised scheme that addresses the requirements of the GDPR. This involves selecting an appropriate certification scheme, such as Europrivacy, and ensuring that the relevant data processing activities meet its requirements.

An approved independent certification body then assesses the processing activities against the scheme criteria. Once all applicable requirements have been met and any identified non-conformities addressed, the organisation receives certification confirming that the assessed processing activities comply with GDPR requirements and relevant data protection obligations.
