AS/EN 9100 Certification: Aerospace Quality Management System

Strengthen the quality and safety of aerospace products and services with an industry-specific quality management system.

AS/EN 9100 Certification: Aerospace Quality Management System

Certification to AS/EN 9100 demonstrates your organisation's ability to meet the stringent quality, safety and regulatory requirements of aerospace customers. As the globally recognised quality management standard for the aviation, space and defence (ASD) sector, it is often a prerequisite for doing business with major OEMs. Certification to AS/EN 9100 delivers tangible commercial value by enabling access to markets, strengthening customer confidence, and supporting long-term competitiveness..

What is the AS/EN 9100 series?

The AS/EN 9100 series comprises three standards: AS/EN 9100 for design, development, production, installation and servicing; AS/EN 9110 for maintenance, repair and overhaul; and AS/EN 9120 for warehousing and distribution.

Together, these standards establish industry-specific quality requirements across the global aerospace supply chain. Built on ISO 9001, the series provides a harmonised quality management framework that addresses both civil and military aviation n

AS/EN 9100 defines quality requirements for organisations involved in design, development, production, installation and servicing. It builds on ISO 9001 to create a globally harmonised standard tailored to the needs of aerospace organisations.

AS/EN 9110 sets out requirements for organisations undertaking maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities. It addresses the additional regulatory and operational demands placed on aerospace repair providers.

AS/EN 9120 is not intended for organisations that carry out rework or repair activities. Any organisation performing work that could affect product characteristics or conformity should implement AS/EN 9100 or another appropriate quality management system standard.

AS/EN 9120 is not intended for organisations that carry out rework or repair activities. Organisations performing work that affects, or could affect, product characteristics or conformity should implement AS/EN 9100 or another appropriate quality management system standard.

The AS/EN 9100 series helps you achieve:

  • Improved product and process quality
  • Stronger risk management, product safety and operational control
  • Full traceability and configuration control to support regulatory compliance
  • Cost savings through error reduction and prevention
  • Continual improvement and greater organisational efficiency
  • Enhanced customer confidence and satisfaction

Built on ISO's Harmonized Structure (HS), AS/EN 9100 follows the same high-level clause framework as other ISO management system standards. This ensures a consistent approach and enables easier integration with systems for environmental management (ISO 14001), occupational health and safety (ISO 45001), and information security (ISO/IEC 27001), for example.

Value of AS/EN 9100 certification

Certification to the AS/EN 9100 series by an independent third party demonstrates that your organisation meets the stringent quality and safety requirements of the aerospace industry and can consistently fulfil customer and regulatory expectations. As major aerospace OEMs require AS/EN 9100 certification from their suppliers, it also confirms your capability to compete within global aerospace supply chains.

As a result, you get:

  • Enhanced customer confidence and credibility in a highly regulated market
  • Ability to compete when certification is required by OEMs and major suppliers
  • Objective insights from external auditors to identify gaps and improvement opportunities
  • Reduced errors and more stable, reliable processes
  • Stronger assurance of product safety, traceability and regulatory compliance
  • Listing in the globally recognised IAQG OASIS database

How to get certified to AS/EN 9100

To achieve certification and demonstrate both compliance and a commitment to continual improvement, you first need to implement an effective quality management system. DNV is an accredited independent third-party certification body, supporting you throughout the entire journey—from relevant automotive and aerospace training on the AS/EN 9100 series standards, to self-assessments, gap analysis, and certification services.

As a DNV customer, you also get access to a suite of digital tools that can help you ensure compliance, continually improve and manage your entire certification journey with us.

Learn how to get started and be certified

    • Obtain the standard:

Get a licensed copy of the relevant standard and familiarise yourself with the requirements to decide whether certification or registration to this standard is appropriate for your organisation.

    • Review available literature and apply digital tools

Explore available literature, guidance from the standard owners (e.g. ISO/TS 9002 for ISO 9001, ISO 14004 for ISO 14001) and digital sources and tools that can support implementation. As a DNV customer, you also get access to tailored tools that can help you.

    • Assemble a team and define strategy:

Implementing a management system should be a strategic decision for the entire organisation. Senior management must be engaged in the decision, committed to it, and involved in shaping the system. They decide the business strategy the management system should support. In addition, you need a dedicated team to develop and implement your management system.

    • Determine competence needs:

First, your team responsible for implementing and maintaining the management system needs a thorough understanding of the chosen standards. Later, the wider organisation needs awareness training. DNV offers a variety of public and in-house courses worldwide that meet competence development needs at all levels of your organisation.

    • Review consultant options:

Independent consultants can advise on a workable, realistic and cost-effective implementation strategy if you do not already have this competence or capacity in-house.

    • Develop management system documentation:

Decide on an appropriate platform for your documented information (e.g. software, process map- or SharePoint-based). The right platform is important to ensure effective management, communication and implementation.

    • Determine, manage and document processes:

First, identify key processes – what they are, how they work and how they interact. Each process should have a clear purpose, defined responsibilities and expected outputs. The level of documented information needed depends on the organisation’s size, complexity and the importance of each process, but it must include the relevant processes and other documented information needed to deliver intended outcomes and comply with the chosen standard’s requirements.

    • Implement management system:

Clear communication and appropriate competence training are essential. During the implementation phase, you will work to ensure that your organisation operates in line with defined and documented processes. Once this is achieved, you can demonstrate the system’s compliance and effectiveness.

    • Select a certification body/registrar:

Selecting the right certification body or registrar can make a difference throughout your certification journey. DNV offers a trusted partnership approach, a risk-based approach and a range of free digital tools to help you manage your certification journey before, during and after the audit.

    • Consider a pre-audit gap analysis:

Consider a preliminary evaluation by your certification body or registrar to identify and correct non-conformities before starting the official certification process. The purpose is to identify areas of non-conformance or weakness, allowing you to address them before the official certification process begins.

FAQ: AS 9100

  • AS/EN 9100, often referred to as AS9100, is the globally recognised quality management system standard for the aviation, space and defence industries. It defines how aerospace organisations should structure and manage their quality processes to ensure safety, reliability and regulatory compliance. The standard applies to companies involved in aerospace design, manufacturing, maintenance and distribution, and is widely required by major OEMs across the global supply chain.

  • AS/EN 9100, sometimes called AS 9100,  refers to the aerospace industry's dedicated quality management system standard, developed by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG). It builds on ISO 9001 but adapts it to the unique risks and expectations of aerospace operations. In practice, AS/EN 9100 means an organization has a system in place to control its processes, maintain product conformity, ensure full traceability and demonstrate consistent compliance with customer and regulatory requirements.

  • ISO 9001 provides a universal framework for quality management across all industries, while AS/EN 9100 builds on this foundation with additional controls tailored to the aerospace sector. These enhancements address the industry's heightened expectations for safety, reliability and regulatory oversight.

AS/EN 9100 introduces specific requirements in areas such as product safety, configuration management, human factors, supplier approval and detailed traceability, ensuring organisations can effectively manage complex processes and meet aerospace-specific customer requirements.

  • AS/EN 9100 requires organisations to implement a structured quality management system that controls risk, ensures product safety and maintains consistent process performance. Key requirements include managing design and development activities, controlling changes through configuration management, maintaining full traceability of parts and documentation, overseeing suppliers, and addressing human factors to reduce errors. These measures help organisations deliver safe, compliant and reliable aerospace products and services.
