ISO 45001 ballot for 2nd draft (DIS) has commenced

The 3000 comments that originated from the first ballot has been reviewed and taken into consideration for the second DIS (Draft ISO/DIS 45001.2), which commenced on May 19 and will run until July 13. The outcome of the second review will impact when the final standard is released.

Since the ballot of the first Draft International Standard (DIS) failed in May 2016 and approximately 3000 comments were provided, four meetings have been conducted to address all the comments received and provide a consistent revised text for the second DIS.

The main changes between the first and the second draft are:

  • Better alignment with the requirements of ISO 14001:2015
  • Improved key definitions and better consistency of the terms used
  • Revised numbering of the clauses
  • Updated Incident Investigation procedures
  • Annex A completely revised and updated based on the DIS2

(For a more elaborate list of the differences, please see the document attached).

After the ballot, there will be a meeting by the Project Committee ISO/PC 283 and its Working Group in Melaka, Malaysia in September 2017 to review the results of the ballot of the second DIS.

Final release of the standard

When it comes to the timeline of the final publications of ISO 45001, it depends on the following scenarios:

  • If the DIS2 only receives a limited number of comments, and the review of comments of the DIS2 is completed at the September meeting, and also that the ISO/PC 283 is able to avoid the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) stage, a final publication could occur around November 2017.
  • If an FDIS stage is considered necessary, or a large volume of comments is received, the final publication would be around March 2018 at the earliest.

DNV GL - Business Assurance is participating in the development of the standard both through the Independent International Organisation for Certification (IIOC) and direct representation in the Project Committee.
