The giant car carrier is being built for P.D. Gram and Leif Hoegh & Co and will be operated by Hoegh Autoliners. It is 199.90 metres long and 32.26 metres wide. The vessel was launched from the slipway earlier this month, while its sister vessel was keel-laid on the same occasion.
This world record is being achieved through cooperation between the Uljanik Shipyard in Pula, Croatia, the shipowner and DNV. Both vessels will be an estimated 55,300 gross tons. They will be equipped with MAN B&W 14,220 KW engine, and their class notation will be 1A1 Car Carrier Ro/Ro E0 NAUT-OC TMON BIS.
Two series of car carriers are presently being built to DNV class at Uljanik Shipyard – these two vessels carrying 7,000 vehicles each and eight more carrying 4,900 vehicles each. These eight vessels are being built for Ray Car Carries Ltd.
Uljanik Shipyard has been in existence for a long time and has a solid reputation. Since 1957 the yard has delivered 206 vessels – including some of the world’s largest VLCCs. All in all, 52 of these vessels have been classed by DNV. This figure will increase by ten once the vessels described above are completed.
DNV has a strong position in the car carrier market, and almost 25 % of this fleet is classed to DNV.
