Type Certification

To ensure the quality of the wind turbines used in a wind farm project, type certification is often a contract condition from developers, investors, and/or insurance companies.

National schemes such as the Danish and Dutch Type Certification schemes have existed for years. They are also recognised outside Denmark and the Netherlands. Until now they have been based on national schemes and codes. The industry trend seems to be a move towards standardisation, and a new international schema called the IEC WT 01 Type Certification System. Based on the IEC and ISO standards most modules are more or less equivalent to the content of the Danish and Dutch Type Certification schemes.

On these Type Certification pages, we will help you understand the what and why of Type Certification - what it is and why your project will benefit from it.

Partner with DNV for:

  • Certification of your wind turbines according to the IEC WT 01 Type Certification System. This international system is based on the principle of mutual recognition by participants. The system is intended to create significant benefit to the manufacturer by reducing the number of steps necessary to obtain certification or approval at national level.

  • Certification of your wind turbines according to the Danish Type Certification Scheme. Both land-based and offshore wind turbines are included in the approval scheme. The Danish Energy Agency has issued a number of instructions to support the Type Certification Scheme.

  • Certification of your wind turbines according to the Dutch Type Certification Scheme. This scheme is to the extent possible based on the requirements of the international wind turbine standard IEC 61400-1. Where no special requirements are given in IEC 61400-1, local recognized standards are referred to.

  • Certification of your wind turbines according to the DNV modified IEC WT 01 Type Certification System. This system is set up in order to account for the different stages in the development of a wind turbine. This system is based on the IEC WT 01 Type Certification System, except that outstanding matters with no safety implications are allowed.

  • Design verification of your wind turbines according to German regulations. These regulations specify requirements for 'Gutachten' of the machine and the tower loads. Contact us for more information.

  • Design verification according to agreed codes and standards. If you need verifications according to other codes or standards, we can offer tailor made scopes for your needs. Contact us for more information.

See the road to certification will describe the type certification process. Accredited certification describes the requirements to which the certification bodies are subjected.

DNV offers certification worldwide, and holds a wide range of national accreditations. With our global network of local resources, we can provide you with the certification most suitable to your needs and company location. Through our technical co-operation with RISØ National Laboratory in Denmark since 1987, we are engaged in the front-end wind energy research. We have been active in developing international rules and standards for the wind energy industry—both offshore and onshore—since the mid-80s. Our wind energy services are delivered by our DNV Wind Energy unit.
