Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

A LCA identifies, quantifies and estimates environmental impacts of product-, process- or service systems. The tool considers the entire "life cycle" of the system being studied, i.e. from raw material extraction to the end-of-life management alternatives.

DNV’s environmental life cycle assessment services are specifically targeted towards:

  • Identification of the most environmentally significant processes in the different life cycle stages of the system
  • Identification of the most significant environmental burdens in the different life cycle stages of the system
  • Identification of whether local optimisation causes shifts of environmental burdens to other sites or stages in the life cycle
  • Assessment of the environmental performance of the system being studied through comparison between alternative systems, or comparison with other criteria

LCA has become an important decision making tool in:

  • Strategic planning
  • Evaluation of clean technology alternatives
  • Product or process system development and conceptual choices
  • Environmental labels and product declarations
  • Public policy development

DNV performs LCA studies in accordance with the ISO 14040 standard series. LCA studies can be carried out at various detail levels based on your requirements, complexity of the system under study and purpose of the study. The studies can also be combined with the use of other decision making tools such as Life Cycle Costing.
