Today DNV has more than 250 employees working with materials technology and structural integrity.
DNV offers laboratory services within the area of materials technology and qualification of components and systems. The testing expertise is combined with theoretical knowledge of materials, failure modes/mechanisms and systems competence. Hence, the laboratories are an important part of the technology base in DNV and are well integrated with other DNV activities (e.g. pipelines, subsea systems, risers, umbilicals, well intervention, foundation, drilling, machinery etc.).
The laboratory facilities are located in Norway (Høvik and Bergen), Singapore, Malaysia and USA (Dublin, Ohio). All together these laboratories are fully equipped with the necessary modern type of equipment for conducting the following materials technology services:
- Failure investigation
- Materials selection
- Corrosion assessment and testing
- Testing of coating
- Design and verification of corrosion protection systems
- Qualification of technology
- Fracture mechanics and fatigue assessments
- Finite element analyses
- Advisory services, trouble shooting and studies
- Failure mode identification processes (HAZOP, HAZID, FMECA
- Bid evaluations and initial concept studies
- Materials verification and examination (in lab and the field
- Standardised and non-standard testing of metallic materials, thermoplastic materials, elastomers and fibre reinforced plastics
- Full scale and tailor made testing of components and equipment
- Environmental testing
- Fuel testing
- Quality surveillance and fabrication follow-up; e.g. during fabrication of plates, pipes, components and at coating yards
- Third-party verification of specifications and procedures
- Development of standards, recommended practices and guidelines
- Initiation and running of Joint Industry Projects (JIPs).
