Objective of the document
The main objective of the Guidance Document (GD), prepared by ESReDA “Accident Analysis Group, is to highlight some vital aspects of how to obtain data for use in the analysis of accidents, incidents and near-misses, and further to suggest ways of overcoming the problems that may be encountered in such work. It is of great importance that proper attention is given to all levels and stages in the development and operation of the databases. The GD is developed mainly for existing and future database operators and end-users, and may serve as the first step in the work for standardisation and harmonisation of accident analysis, data collection and validation, data representation, and quality assurance of data in the databases. This will, in turn, enable and facilitate an exchange and sharing of data between databases and in-depth analysis of the accidents. Furthermore, the end-users will be guaranteed as reliable data as possible for use in their analyses. In addition, several database operators have realised throughout the years that the feedback they get from the end-users is important for the quality and adequacy of the contents in the database. Hence, a close co-operation between the users of data and operators should be aimed for as far as possible.

ESReDA
ESReDA (European Safety Reliability & Data Association) is a European Association established in 1992 to promote research, application and training in Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS). The Association provides a forum for the exchange of information, data and current research on Safety and Reliability and a focus for specialist expertise.
