ESReDA - Handbook on Quality of Reliability Data

This book summarises the results of the European Safety, Reliability and Data Association (ESReDA) studies and offers a comprehensive introduction to the collection, analysis and quality assurance of reliability data.

Background
The requirements of safety analysis and maintenance, availability and cost optimisation studies demand access to comprehensive, high quality reliability data. Although generic data sources are useful, the real benefits are obtained by the collection and analysis of in-house information. Maintenance and inspection reports, downtime and cost data provide a wealth of information and will closely reflect the culture and practice of the plant and organisation from which it was obtained.

The collection, organisation and analysis of reliability data into a computerised data base can offer many benefits. However, it is essential that there is a clear understanding of the requirements and that adequate controls are applied to ensure that uncertainties are minimised. There can also be advantages in collecting data in a standardised format since this will facilitate the exchange of safety, maintenance and availability information between organisations. Data quality assurance is, therefore, important and needs to be addressed by every organisation concerned with the collection and analysis of reliability data.

To this end a Project Group of the European Safety, Reliability and Data Association (ESReDA) has worked over the last 3 years to evaluate best-practice methods employed by leaders in reliability data bank technology. This book summarises the results of the ESReDA studies and offers a comprehensive introduction to the collection, analysis and quality assurance of reliability data.

Content

  • Introduction state of the art
  • Scope and objectives
  • Failure and reliability data
  • Methods for data bank evaluation

  • ESReDA

European Safety, Reliability & Data Association, ESReDA is an European Association established in 1992 to promote research, application and training in Reliability, Availability and Safety (RAMS). The Association provides a forum for the exchange of information, data and current research in Safety and Reliability and a focus for specialists expertise.

Objective of the Book
The purpose of this book is to assist Reliability Engineers in the Industry (mainly) to improve their collection and use of Reliability Data.

This is done by discussing questions such as

  • How to build and operate a Reliability Database.
  • What should be considered by a designer and operator of a reliability data collection system and Database?
  • How can sufficient quality be achieved, measured and improved?
  • How can you improve the use and usefulness of in-house data?
  • How to deal with data from generic sources.
  • What should be considered as a user of generic data?
  • How can one combine ones own and generic data?
  • How to measure your quality.
