Sand management strategy

Statoil

Description
The production capacity of wells on Gullfaks A was restricted due to sand production and the MSR (Maximum Sandfree Rate) criterion. DNV helped Statoil to develop a new sand management strategy through the application of state-of-the-art methods and models for assessing sand erosion in piping and other critical components.

Challenges
The new criteria needed to achieve:

  • increased production
  • reduced inspection
  • no critical erosion in the system
  • maintenance of standards for safety and environmental protection
  • production regularity

User Benefit
Individual production criteria were established for each group of wells, based on the production and operational characteristics.

This work has assisted Statoil in developing new criteria for sand management, which has resulted in improved safety levels, increased production and optimisation of production and inspection.
