Critical issues:

• Essent Energy, like many industrial companies, identified human behaviour as one of the major direct causes for incidents and accidents
• Essent did not want to create additional regulations and procedures, and realised that a cultural change with respect to individual safety behaviour was needed
• Essent wanted to focus on safety in order to improve the overall business performance

Solutions:

• Tailored material was developed to introduce risk knowledge (e.g. risk matrices, loss causation model, behavioural observation)
• Essent Energy selected safety themes, such as working at height, electricity, work permits, etc
• DNV Consulting developed, together with Essent, easy to use materials such as booklets with themed materials, posters and roll-out presentations
• Coaches were trained by an external psychologist and feedback was generated which was used in the further development of the programme
