BP: development and implementation of a process to audit greenhouse gas emissions
As part of its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) strategy, BP commissioned a team comprising DNV Consulting, KPMG and ICF Consulting to undertake an audit of its GHG emissions data.
Critical issues: - Underpin the commitment to reduce GHG emissions in a transparent and credible way
- Provide valuable knowledge in audit and verification of GHG emissions and make this available to other interested organisations
- Help ensure that GHG emissions were traded on a transparent and reliable basis
Solutions: - The initial scope included auditing of GHG emissions for 1990 (baseline for the Group target) and 1998 (on which trading allocations were based), and later involved annual opinions for 2000 and 2001
- The team reviewed the GHG reporting protocols against best practice, developed a robust audit process and facilitated input from an external independent expert panel which was invited to advise and challenge the audit project
Value delivered: - This was a pioneering exercise, which enabled BP to maintain their leading status in the field, and influence the development of international reporting guidelines and audit processes within industry
- BP was also able to have confidence in the data supporting their internal trading system
