LNG assessments on Canary Islands

DNV Consulting has performed an independent assessment of two proposed land-based LNG receiving, storage and re-gasification terminals on Gran Canaria and Tenerife. The terminals will supply natural gas for electricity generation in the existing power plants on the islands.

From a safety perspective, the proposed terminals were assessed regarding the potential consequences of leaks and exposure to nearby villages and surroundings. In addition, DNV reviewed environmental concerns, such as the terminals’ impact on marine life, birds and plants in the area.

In several locations around the world, offshore-based terminals are being preferred for their reduced environmental impacts and quicker governmental approval process. Several offshore concepts were also assessed for Gran Canaria and Tenerife, but the prevailing weather conditions and currently available technology made these concepts unable to meet the requirements for ensuring a highly reliable gas supply.

GASCAN will move forward with the proposed land-based terminals.
