Critical issue:
Zambia has experienced significant environmental impacts from the mining and process industries including large waste generation, emissions to air, water and land, as well as excessive energy consumption

Solutions:

• Capacity building and training of local experts – "train-the-trainer"
• Cleaner Production training programme for companies
• 7 programmes from 1998 – 2004
• Cleaner Production projects in 75 companies
• Establishment of a Zambian Cleaner Production Centre

Value delivered:

• US$ 32m yearly savings and increased profit for local industry, with average payback of 4 months
• Reduced pollution
• Improved competitiveness of companies
• Enhancement of industry compliance to environmental regulations
• Capacity building and development of a Cleaner Production Centre which will continue the good work
