Established under the Kyoto Protocol, the JI scheme is an incentive to companies in industrialised countries to reduce emissions through cooperative efforts. When participating in a JI project, you can meet your reduction commitments abroad where greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement costs are lower. The Kyoto Protocol requires that certain JI projects are subjected to determination and/or verification by an operating entity, i.e. third party verifier.

- Determination (validation) of your JI project. This is a prerequisite if the host country has not established a GHG inventory and reporting procedures in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol.

The UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) is working on an accreditation scheme for operating entities. DNV expects to become UNFCCC-accredited as an operating entity under the Joint Implementation scheme to perform independent project verifications of emission reductions. DNV is already accredited by UNFCCC for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.
