UK Emissions Trading Scheme

The UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UKETS) started operating in 2002. Participation in the scheme means that you voluntarily take on a legally binding commitment to reduce your greenhouse gas emission levels.

Participating companies can use the scheme either to buy allowances to meet their targets, or to sell any over-achievement of these targets.

You can participate either as:

  • A direct participant, having an absolute cap on emissions.

  • A participant under a Climate Change Agreement (CCA), having relative emissions targets.

The emission trading possibilities are different for the two types of participants. Go to the UKETS website for details.

Verification of emissions required
The scheme requires that all direct participants and CCA participants seeking to generate allowances for over-achieving their target must have their emissions verified by an independent organisation accredited by the UK Accreditation Service. DNV is accredited for verification of CO2 emission data under this scheme within a wide sector of industries.
