Emissions Trading

Under the Kyoto Protocol emissions trading is encouraged as a means for industrialised countries to fulfil their emission reduction commitments. As new emissions trading schemes emerge, greenhouse gas emissions could have a direct impact on the value of your company’s assets and liabilities.

In May 2002, the European Union (EU) and all its Member States ratified the Kyoto Protocol, committing them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8 %. To help honour their commitment, the European Commission agreed upon the European Directive on Emissions Trading (EU ETS) in July 2003. The EU ETS will limit CO2 -emissions of relevant installations to allocation levels in two periods, 2005-2007 and 2008-2012. The scheme covers certain installations in the energy, metals, minerals, and pulp and paper sectors.

There are also national trading schemes in countries like Denmark and the UK that have been implemented to assist countries in achieving commitments made under the Kyoto Protocol.

On this Emissions Trading homepage, we will help you understand the what and why of emissions trading—what it is and why your business will benefit from it.

Partner with DNV for:

Annual Verification is required for all participants in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). The operator of the installation in the scheme has the responsibility to appoint an accredited verification body to perform annual verification – this important task cannot be left until after the end of the calendar year.

DNV is accredited for annual verification of GHG emissions for all categories of installations. Verification of CO2 -emissions data under the The UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UKETS).

DNV is a leading independent greenhouse gas verifier operating globally. We believe in a partnership approach that benefits you and your organisation. Our greenhouse gas experts are used by international organisations, governments, and industry.
